6 Hipster Hangouts in Canggu, Bali

Half an hour away from the crowds of Seminyak, Canggu is the area sandwiched between Kerobokan and Echo Beach. Once a hideout of surfers, it’s a secret no more with many cafes and restaurants mushrooming up. Our advice? Hit this surf ‘hood up before it gets too crowded.

#1 Little Flinders

Little-Flinders
A classic breakfast meal delicious anywhere in the world

This quaint little café is like a little piece of Melbourne that’s been transplanted along Jalan Batu Bolong. The al fresco seating is perfect for people watching and other street action. Food-wise, they serve up a good selection of Indonesian and Western cuisine as well as good coffee.

Address: Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No. 78

Opening hours: 8am to 10pm daily

#2 Gypsy Bali

Gypsy-Bali
On trend with minimalism

With minimalist interiors, a high ceiling, and airy space, Gypsy is probably the most Instagram-worthy spot on this list. Started by a group of French-Canadians (including the chef), the folks at Gypsy have made it a point to provide good vibes to go along with the hearty, yummy food and cocktails.

Address: Jalan Munduk Catu No. 1

Custom motorcycles, surfboards, art gallery, live gig venue, barber, and café – Deus wears many hats and is probably as hipster as it gets. The Balinese child of Australian company Deus Ex Machina has a selection of international dishes, cocktails, and a laid-back vibe (especially in the beer garden outside).

Address: Jalan Batu Mejan No. 8
Tel: +62 811 388 150
Opening hours: 7am to 11pm daily

#4 Betelnut Café

Known for their hippy-chic vibes, healthy options (the wraps, salads, and smoothies), and the ability to cater to vegans, you can still get burgers and fries, and even sinful sweets like chocolate mint cheesecake at Betelnut Café. Grab a seat upstairs under the thatched roof for a better view and a bit of a breeze.

Address: Jalan Batu Bolong No.60

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 7 am to 10 pm

Remember to hashtag #CrateCafeCanggu

Crate is as no-frills as the name goes. Practically a concrete box with communal seating, Crate is a great place for solo travellers to meet other people over a brekkie bowl, smoothies, and a strong cuppa joe. Since the place is always busy, expect service to be a little slow, and we don’t have to tell you that it’s best to head down early.

Address: Jalan Batu Bolong, 64
Tel: +62 812 3894 3040
Opening hours: 7am to 3pm

The best way to see the paddy fields up close

Comfy bean bag chairs, an unbeatable view of lush green rice fields, healthy crepes and juices; all these and more make Cloud 9 a popular hangout in Canggu. Located along the famous Canggu shortcut (an extremely narrow two-way road), diners might just see the occasional car fall into the paddy field – #balilife at its realest.

Address: Cloud 9 is located at Jl Subak
Tel: +62 812 3823 6185
Opening hours: 8am to 11pm daily
