With plenty of shopping and dining out options, some great bars and a couple of fun things to see and do, Mong Kok is the place to be in Hong Kong. Sure it may be a little hectic, but isn’t that what life in Honkers is all about? These are our absolute favourite spots around that we think you’ll love too.

What To Eat and Drink:
#1 Egg Waffles – Or Gai Daan Zai
You may have seen this street food all over HK, but in Mong Kok, but you can hardly walk two steps without finding a street vendor selling this local delight. These sweet ‘n’ crispy little guys are the perfect pick-me-up after a long day pounding the pavements.

After a long day navigating the packed streets of MK, you may be in need of a beer come 5pm. The Ale Project is one of the only craft beer focused bars in Kowloon and has an extensive selection of beers and ales to choose from (local brews and selected imports). For a few light snacks there are also sandwiches and such.

For serious coffee fans, Knockbox is the place to come to help fuel your Mong Kok adventure. The team behind the cafe are truly passionate about coffee and want to show it off in its truest forms (so no syrups available here!). On Friday nights, they even host a “coffee premiere” where local coffee enthusiasts gather and taste unlimited brewed coffee from 6.30 – 10pm.

#4 One Dim Sum
My favourite local dim sum spot, you can find me here at some point most weekends. My top picks at any Dim Sum place will always be char siu bao and siu mai, but I can never bring myself to leave without having at least one egg custard bun. Be sure to get there early though, the doors may open at 10am, but there’s always a queue!

#5 Afternoon Tea at Alibi, Cordis Hotel
For a refreshing change of pace in chaotic Mong Kong, Afternoon Tea at Alibi is the ideal choice. The picnic inspired afternoon tea is served in a traditional wicker hamper and offers up sophisticated, modern twists on the traditional faves, such as mini crab cake burgers and foie gras pâté with bourbon bacon jam on freshly baked French baguettes.

Formerly The Backyard Bar, this outdoor area was recently revamped and transformed into The Garage Bar, an outdoor food truck and craft beer destination. Try out the Ninja Lobster Roll and wash it down with an ice cold Big Wave Bay, by the Hong Kong Beer Co., or choose three different labels and create your own beer flight.

#7 Sky 726
Perched on the top floor of the Nathan 726, Sky offers up a killer view of downtown Mong Kok. Enjoy their high-end French cuisine and be sure to sip on some quality cocktails, away from the busy streets below. Definitely a new date night option!

What to do:
We could hardly write about Mong Kok and not mention the famous Ladies Market. The 1km stretch is jam packed with stalls selling clothing, accessories, toys, electrical items, souvenirs and so much more. It’s always bustling, but it’s best to go at night when the streets are lit up and the place really comes alive.

#2 The Langham Place Shopping Mall
If you’re in need of a break from the streets of Mong Kok, find refuge (and air-conditioning) in the colossal Langham Place shopping mall. Containing over 300 shops, with international brands as well as local independent labels, Langham Place has everything you need under one roof. Also, housing a cinema and an array of eateries, it’s the perfect spot to know just in case the rain decides to pour.

One of our favourite spots in all of Hong Kong is Flower Market Road. It’s a welcome respite from the extreme hustle and bustle of the Mong Kok streets. Located on the Prince Edward side, expect to find streets lined with shops selling all varieties of flowers and plants at very reasonable prices. It’s perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll after filling your stomachs with dim sum.

Another MK wonder. Goldfish Market is an entire street dedicated to selling, you guessed it – fish! As well as the huge variety of live fish available (and every imaginable accessory), the market bizarrely also has small pets such as hamsters, frogs and turtles. The market is a weird and wonderful place to explore in this city of ours!

#5 Me and George
Hidden in the depths of the Ladies Market, “Me and Gee” is one of the cheapest second-hand stores around. This diamond in the rough is famous for its racks of Japanese and Korean vintage clothes at bargain prices. You may need to dig a little to come away with the good stuff, but part of the fun is in the hunt!

Another must-know haven in Mong Kok is the MOKO shopping mall. Shop ‘til you drop at the huge variety of major brands on offer and then feast to your heart’s content at any of the many amazing restaurants!

If running about Kowloon all day has your feet gettin’ a little sore, Sneaker Street is the place to head to get some new kicks. As the name would suggest, it’s an entire street offering up pretty much every sportswear and sneaker brand out there and is a must visit for any mama who loves her comfy shoes!
