One of the perks of being a Luxe Nomad is the travel. We are on the move a lot, travelling from villa to villa in search of the best of experiences for our guests. A few months ago, four of us spent some time at Baan Asan in Koh Samui. And as many villas as we see, this is one villa that is not easy to forget – for all the right reasons.
Quick facts
- Baan Asan has five-bedrooms and eight-bathrooms across five pavilions.
- Two of the five-bedrooms have adjoining children’s bedrooms.
- The villa sleeps up to ten adults and four children.
- Baan Asan sits directly on the beach in Taling Ngam on Koh Samui’s western coast. This gives you uninterrupted sight lines to the island’s best sunset views.
- Baan Asan’s 20-metre private pool features a shallow section and a jacuzzi. There is also a gym, movie room, seaside gazebo for spa treatments and a library.
- The villa comes fully staffed with a private chef.
The villa might seem imposing at first. Baan Asan is a staggeringly large, white-walled home. Heavy wooden gates make it feel like a fortress to be conquered.
As soon as those gates open though, the atmosphere changes and you’re suddenly welcomed into a world that feels peaceful and vibrant at the same time. When you enter the main pavilion with its vast living area, you’re immediately greeted by enormous views of the sea and five islands in the distance.
Before you can reach the ocean, however, you must step across the main pavilion’s polished black floors onto a clear-covered terrace. Once there, you circumvent a large water feature with a waterfall that pours over its stone edges. Past the pond, you’ll find the 20-metre pool with its jacuzzi and separate children’s shallow pool.
On either side of the pool, there are two more pavilions, each housing individual bedroom suites for maximum privacy. From the pool, you then reach the gazebo and go through a large garden.
At this point, you have to try not (or just let yourself) get distracted by the large teak wooden swing sitting in the middle of a fruit garden, where we have spent many a cocktail hour watching the sunset.
Beyond that, a quiet stretch of ocean is all yours to enjoy.
Are you feeling enchanted yet? There’s plenty more to love, trust me.

Where you’ll be sleeping
Each of the five pavilions features one ensuite bedroom. Within the first pavilion, you’ll climb up an incredible floating staircase, leading you up to the galleried next level. Moving upwards past this level’s gym with private shower room, you’ll carry on one story up to the master suite. This suite covers the buildings entire floor. Inside, you’ll first encounter a sophisticated lounge with comfortable seating, high-end entertainment equipment and, behind another door, a personal kitchen.
Behind a floating wall, you’ll find the bed with views overlooking the entire property.
Moving past another floating wall, you’ll encounter a dressing area and further beyond even that, the bathroom with huge tub, and twin walk-in rain shower.
For those who prefer being closer to the pool, the four pavilions that stand alongside it each represent a different element – Earth, Fire, Wood and Water. The pavilions are styled with a focus on the various elements’ respective colours.
Each pavilion has a comfortable lounge area with steps leading to the bed, dressing area, a private terrace and ensuite bathroom. For those travelling with children, two of these four poolside pavilions comes with a separate room for the kids with two bunk-beds for the perfect sleepover and their own ensuite bathrooms.
The food & drink you’ll be consuming
Long before I stepped foot in Baan Asan, I had been hearing talk of the villa’s private chef, who seems to belong at a Michelin star restaurant rather than a private villa in Samui.
And you’ll see why when you arrive here. The chef is not only able to craft the most incredible Thai food but Western, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Vegetarian and really anything children will eat. The Tom Yum is to die for, and each meal is exquisite.
In fact, Baan Asan has two kitchens on the main floor with a third in the master bedroom. One of the ground floor kitchens is designed for Western meal preparation and cooking lessons. The other is a Thai-style kitchen with everything the private chef could need to create the perfect meal, including a lava-stone grill.
Where you’ll be located
Baan Asan may feel like it’s out on its own, and that is part of the beauty of it. The villa sits on Koh Samui’s western coast in the quiet area of Taling Ngam, with nothing but greenery in the back and the sea in front.
The villa is about an hour’s drive from the Samui airport or the busy Chaweng area, depending on traffic.
It may seem far, but Baan Asan is in no way cut off from the Samui action. Lipa Noi beach, famous for its pristine white sand, is a 10-minute drive from the villa. Nature and wildlife enthusiasts can venture inland to attractions like Na Mueang Waterfall and the Safari Park, which are just 20 minutes away by car. Then there are the seaside Taling Ngam Caves; if you’re headed there, you can also make a detour to the Elephant Gate.
The things you’ll love most
As much as we love pools for relaxing beside, there are so many other places to tuck yourself away in and enjoy life. The swing by the beach is one of our favourites as you’ll get to gaze out over the ocean and enjoy the sight of the sun setting behind the distant islands.
The gazebo near the edge of the poolside garden is well outfitted with plenty of shade and sofas. In the middle of the gazebo, you can treat yourself to a massage or other spa treatment for total rejuvenation.

If, instead, you feel like you’re missing out on your workouts and prefer to do those indoors, you have access to the gym inside the main pavilion. You won’t miss out on the spectacular views in there either. The glass walls and windows allow you to spin and imagine being in the water at the same time.
If you’re more design and architecturally inclined, Baan Asan was created with the hope that each room would have a feature of interest. Whether it’s the floating stairs, or the grand recycled teak wood dining table, the teak chess table in the media room, or the stunning photos of Koh Samui natives, you’re sure to find something you adore.
We adore Baan Asan and know you will too.
