Before you go over the (h)edge(hog) with excitement, remember that animals must be respected. Respect how they like to be held, understand if they need space, or if they’re a little shy, or if they’re just past their bedtime. And now back to our regularly scheduled programming: there’s a hedgehog bar opening tonight in Shibuya. Tokyo nightlife will never be the same again.
Chikuchiku Café is primarily a daytime café (open 12pm-8pm), where you can watch a number of adorable hedgehogs laze around in dollhouses designed specially for them. It really is as cute as you imagine. But from today, 18 October, Chikuchiku is extending its opening hours for a hedgehog bar, operating from 7-10pm on Thursdays and Fridays.

It’s just as well, since hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures and would likely make better companions for after-work drinking personnel than any ol’ human anyway. There’s a catch: you can’t touch the hedgehogs during bar hours.
When you show up looking sharp at the café, which is just a 2 minute walk from the Shibuya train station, you’ll need to pay an entry fee of JPY 2,800 (approx. USD 25) for an hour-long stay that comes with two alcoholic beverages of your choice and unlimited soft drinks. House rules: no visitors under the age of 20 during bar hours, no drunk visitors, and no BYOB.
And we cannot remind you enough, but don’t be a prick, treat the hedgehogs well and don’t startle them.
