In the internet age, where we rely on the opinions of others to guide our travels, it’s not always easy to know what reviews are real and what’s been created by an overly angry troll. Maybe that’s why we put so much emphasis on awards like the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence – what we often see as an emblem on a website or the sticker on a window featuring the TripAdvisor owl.
For any accommodation to feature one means that they’re definitely doing A LOT right. The award is kind of a big deal. When it comes to accommodation, it’s presented to only the creme de la creme, where owners consistently provide outstanding service and experiences. So, when we found out that Koh Samui’s Villa M received the Certificate of Excellence for the second year in a row, we were pretty darn excited.
We love Villa M, but to learn more about what makes it so special, we chatted with Leslie Macpherson who owns the villa with husband Neill.

Congrats on the award! How does it feel to win it for the second-straight year?
We are all thrilled that Villa M was awarded Trip Advisor’s special and exclusive accolade “Certificate of Excellence 2019 – Outstanding Property” for the second year in a row. Thank you especially to our splendid in-house team, Khun Chee and Khun Chon.
Your TripAdvisor reviews are stellar. What is it about Villa M that you think resonates with so many guests?
Many guests have commented that Villa M offers everything as promised in its marketing and looks exactly like or better than the photos. A recent review perhaps summarises it best:
“The view, the location, the service and of course, the villa itself is simply beautiful, just a slice of heaven. From the first email to arriving home, Leslie has been amazing and so wonderful to deal with. The villa is walking distance to everything at Fisherman’s village but just enough away from the bustle. Khun Chee looked after our every need from helping with tours recommending local restaurants to making our stay perfect. Would not hesitate to recommend this Luxury Villa to anyone looking for a special getaway. Absolutely loved our stay here.”

What do you hope your guests take away from their time with you?
In creating and designing Villa M, we have paid intimate attention to detail. We have not furnished the villa generically, but have sourced antique furniture, artwork and memorabilia from all over Asia.
We wanted the villa to be outstanding, not only with its location and breathtaking tropical beachfront, providing comfortable luxury holiday villa accommodation, keeping our guests always in mind, and its exceptional award-winning personalised service, but, in itself, the quintessential Asian travel experience.
We hope our guests take all this away with them and more – Villa M is idyllic beachfront living at its best, their island home, and the perfect stay for their Samui vacation.
A lot of your reviews mention the quality of your staff. Can you tell us about them?
Our experiences are often emotional – our guests may not always remember what we did or said, but they will never forget the way we made them feel.
All our staff are passionate about providing exemplary service and love working with and for all our guests. Khun Chee, our concierge, and Khun Chon, our maid, are both amazing. The pair have won awards for Best Manager and Best Maid from Luxury Villas and Homes. They are a dynamic duo. Khun Chee can organise everything and anything. Khun Chon has a great eye for detail and small touches, keeping Villa M beautiful.
Of all the feedback you receive from guests, what’s the one thing that makes you proudest.
This is a difficult question to answer as we are proud of everything – the villa itself, the location, our team. We ask our guests before they leave to write in our Guest Book and complete our feedback survey. Having already written so much, it makes us very appreciative that many have also taken the time to write their reviews when they arrive home.
It is wonderful to know that they really value their stay with us.

What are you going to do to keep up your winning streak?
Keep on doing what we do now, always learning how we can do even better and implementing policy and practices accordingly.
We could sit here, staring at that view, all day, every day.
Do you have any big plans for Villa M this coming year?
Moving forward, we plan to keep adhering to our Green Philosophy with a holistic approach to preservation and conservation of natural resources. We will continue to acknowledge our social responsibility and what effect our choices have on our environment.
Villa M has already introduced amenities, non-plastic straws and is now researching alternatives to plastic bottles in the house, including installing water filters and recyclable bottles for our guests.
