12 Things to do in Bali: August 2019

When it comes to Bali, August is where and when it’s at. The month features the hottest days of the year (both literally and figuratively) – we’re talking warm sunshine, tropical breezes, tons of parties, plenty of arts and cultural exhibitions, and of course, the beach! Here are the events you should be checking out this August.

Arts & Culture

#1 Dayak Arts & Cultural Exhibition

When: Aug 3 – 4, 10 AM – 7 PM

Where: Workshop

What: Celebrating the indigenous Dayak people, this event will showcase Dayak arts and culture. During the exhibition, attendees can learn how to weave from a Master Weaver, create ethnic jewellery, and experience Dayak food, as well as discover some eco-fashion products.

#2 TR3S TIGRES ~~ In the Light

When: Aug 8, 7 PM – 10 PM

Where: Tamora Gallery

What: The opening party for the Berawa Food & Wine Festival, this art exhibition displays the works of three talented artists, has a live wall painting and an art installation (plus lots of music). There will be free-flowing kombucha from 7-8 PM.

#3 Ubud Village Jazz Festival

When: Aug 16 – 17, 2 PM – 10:30 PM both days

Where: Agung Rai Museum of Art

What: This two-day festival is a haven for lovers of all things jazz. The festival has a diverse line-up of jazz forms and features a mix of both local and international musicians. In addition to the performances, the festival includes workshops with music educators. 

#4 Canggu Surf, Music & Short Film Festival

When: Aug 23 – 25, Beginning 10 AM each day

Where: The Lawn

What: Showcasing all that is surf, this festival is a weekend of surf competitions, short films, music and food & drink. The surf event includes a Classic Twin Fin competition and a Beta Board Challenge. And, if you’re interested, the short film competition is accepting submissions until Friday 16 August!

#5 Sanur Village Festival

When: Aug 21 – 25

Where: Pantai Matahari Terbit

What: Emphasizing the importance of bamboo, this year’s festival offers a variety of cultural and sporting activities. Amongst the event highlights, there will be the Bali International Triathlon, Sanur Open Golf Tournament, yoga, a music and culture show, food festival, installation of a coral plantation, and baby turtle release(!).

#6 Bali International Kites Festival

When: Aug 15 – 18

Where: Padang Galak, Sanur

What: Created to thank the gods for bountiful harvests and fertility, the Bali International Kite Festival celebrates Bali’s windy season with hundreds of giant kites taking to the skies. Kite flying teams from around the world gather at Padang Galak as they compete with one another to develop the most elaborate kites.

Parties & Festivals

#7 Some Like it Hot

When: Aug 3, 2 PM – 10 PM

Where: KU DE TA

What: KU DE TA is transforming itself into a rustic hideaway with natural, island-inspired décor for this tropical dance party. International artists like Ray Mang, Roland Clark, Joeski and Loco Hero will be performing. Dress code is all about the tropics – think easy-breezy!

#8 Sun Down Circle #28

When: Aug 3, 6 AM – 2 AM

Where: Potato Head Beach Club

What: This mini-festival is a celebration of music and the sun. Start off with an early morning sound bath led by gong experts from Pyramids of Chi, followed by a communal breakfast with celebrated explorer Lawrence Blair. Spend the day learning about sustainability with the team behind the Green School‘s Innovation Hub as they investigate the connections between sound, art and nature in a kids workshop. In the evening and night enjoy performances from Melbourne’s CC: Disco, and local favourites Dea Barandana and Belda.

#9 Into the Wild

When: Aug 10, 4 PM to late

Where: La Plancha

What: La Plancha’s 9th birthday party is all about getting wild. With five DJs hitting the decks, fire dances and fireworks, you can let loose at this epic beach party.

#10 White Party – Metropolis

Where: KU DE TA

What: KU DE TA’s famed White Party is back! This year, the event is an avant-garde, film-noir inspired event where Art Deco and Artifical Intelligence collide. Blurring the lines between real and surreal, dance the night away to performances from Supernova, Kurd Maverick, Loco Hero and KDT All Stars. As it is the White Party, make sure to dress in white (while, of course, sticking to the Art Deco/A.I. theme). Join their Supper Club or Pure Luxe Dinner events for a fine dining experience before joining the mayhem.

#11 Berawa Food & Wine Festival 2019

When: Aug 10, 10 AM – 10 PM

Where: Tamora Gallery

What: A free community event showcasing local, international and Indonesian gourmet goods, artisan products and a whole lot of wine. At the event, there will be 25 curated Food & Beverage and retailer stalls, and 31 different businesses promoting health & beauty and lifestyle products. There will also be several masterclasses, playgrounds for the kids, a VR lounge, live music and a kids bazaar.

Just for Kids

#12 Sunday Family Day

When: Sundays, 10 AM – 3 PM

Where: KU DE TA

What: Sundays at KU DE TA are by and for the kids. Children can enjoy brunch and lunch alongside tons of activities like face-painting, jumping castles, balloons, games and arts and crafts. Meanwhile, the grown-ups can go off and indulge in food, drink and kid-free time.
