Seize the season as it’s set to be an epic one
Japan powder — these two words are enough to get any serious skier and snowboarder really psyched. Powder hunters all over the world consider Hokkaido the holy grail because of its light, dry snow that feels like you’re carving through soft ice cream.
Whether or not you’ve experienced a Japow high, this season warrants a visit to Niseko, Rusutsu or Furano because it’s set to be an epic winter season. Don’t trust us? Here’s the lowdown.
1. A Record-Breaking Snowfall Forecast
Count on La Niña to bring in the snow big time. Historical data shows that La Niña can create record-breaking snow levels to Hokkaido resorts, with Niseko receiving up to 15 metres in past seasons.
Adding to that is a recent report by the Japan Meteorological Association (JMA) citing abundant snow for the 2024/2025 winter season, predicting the heaviest snowfall in Hokkaido in over a decade. As Niseko is situated on the Sea of Japan side, it’s also projected to receive above-average snowfall from December to February — perfectly timed for the holidays!
2. A Longer Ski Season, Thanks To Colder Temperatures
Along with heavier snowfall, there’s likewise an expected drop in temperature this season. The JMA’s forecast reports a 40% chance of below-average temperatures, which should lead to a longer period of snow retention. In fact, our Hokkaido-based colleagues have captured the first snowfall of the season, capping the peaks as early as last weekend. Winter is indeed coming!
